One year ago today, members of
the Animal Liberation Front vandalized Spence Labs and Seashore Hall at
the University of Iowa. They removed animals, spilled chemicals and
damaged computers.
Psychology Department Chair Gregg Oden says
all research programs are now back up and running. But he says things
will never be like they were before the attack. "It was a trying
year...it was also a time where the department really came together in
support of each other."
Last year at this time a police officer
was located at this door with the building...under complete lock down.
Now the building has opened up a little to students. However there are
more security features in place. "Some of it is of course some of the
physical things that you can do...but a lot of it has to do with
general awareness and alertness...people paying attention to who's
around."
Despite the lack of arrests so far, researchers at
the University of Iowa hope their upgraded security will prevent
similar attacks. The FBI says it's getting closer to catching the
vandals, but won't say how soon arrests might come.
